POLICE in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ have launched an investigation into the alleged murder of a homeless man following a stabbing incident early Monday morning on Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
The dead man has been identified only as “Gandy,” believed to be between 30 and 40 years old and of no fixed place of abode. The incident reportedly occurred at about 01:30 hrs.
According to preliminary police investigations, the victim was on Hadfield Street when he was approached by an identifiable male suspect. Investigators said a confrontation subsequently broke out between the two men.
During the altercation, the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a knife, allegedly stabbed the victim once to the centre of his chest. The injured man collapsed at the scene while the suspect fled north along Hadfield Street, still in possession of the weapon.
Emergency Medical Technicians responded and transported the victim for medical attention, but he was later pronounced dead by a doctor on duty at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Police said CCTV cameras in the area have been identified and footage will be reviewed as part of ongoing investigations into the killing.
The body is currently at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting formal identification and a post-mortem examination.
The suspect remains at large as police continue their investigation.
