– more opportunities emerging for citizens
THE Anna Regina Car Park was transformed into a sea of national pride on Monday morning as residents gathered to commemorate Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary with a ceremonial Flag Raising exercise.
The programme blended patriotism with culture, featuring calypso performances, patriotic songs, dances, and spoken word presentations reflecting on Guyana’s history, struggles, and achievements since attaining Independence in 1966.
Delivering the feature address, Madanlall Ramraj said he was highly impressed with the performances and noted that Guyana is advancing rapidly under the dynamic leadership of President Irfaan Ali.
Minister Ramraj said the Government remains focused on ensuring that the country’s resources are wisely allocated for the benefit of all Guyanese. He noted that the world is now witnessing a nation destined for greatness and transformation.
He said Guyana today stands resilient and progressive, adding that the decisions being made during this period of national transformation will shape the lives of future generations.
According to the Minister, under the leadership of President Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, Guyana is experiencing unprecedented growth that cannot be ignored.
He explained that the transformation is not confined to Georgetown alone, as the Government has been bringing services and development directly to the people across the country. He pointed to recent visits by the Vice President to Region Two, where issues affecting residents were addressed directly.
Minister Ramraj said the Government remains people-centred and continues to place citizens first. He highlighted that thousands of Guyanese, particularly in hinterland and Indigenous communities, are now benefitting from improved connectivity and modernised public services.
He also noted that the Government continues to provide free scholarships to qualified persons, ensuring that young people from Regions One, Seven, and Ten can access the same opportunities as those on the coastland.
“Today a young person from Region One, Seven or Ten can experience the same opportunities because of accessibility,” Minister Ramraj said.
The Minister further stated that home ownership is becoming a reality for many citizens and that Guyana is becoming a beacon of opportunity, with new businesses opening and expanding across the country. He added that Guyana is also positioning itself to feed the Caribbean through its expanding agricultural programmes.
Also addressing the gathering was Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, who said it was both a privilege and honour to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Independence of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
He described the milestone as a reminder of the courage, sacrifices, and determination of those who fought tirelessly to secure the nation’s freedom and sovereignty.
“As our Golden Arrowhead rises proudly above us, let it remind us that patriotism is not only about celebrating our nation on Independence Day, but about serving our communities, uplifting one another, and working together to build a stronger and more united Guyana for generations to come,” Mohan said.
He urged citizens to continue embracing unity, togetherness, and national pride, noting that Guyana stands as a shining example of strength through diversity.
“Our many cultures, religions, traditions, and backgrounds are woven together into one beautiful national identity. When we stand together as one people and one nation, there is no challenge too great and no dream beyond our reach,” he stated.
Mohan also praised the leadership of President Ali and the PPP/C Government, stating that Guyana is experiencing unprecedented progress and transformation. He noted that in Region Two, development is no longer a promise but a reality, citing major road upgrades, improved drainage and irrigation systems, expanded healthcare services, modern schools, housing developments, sports facilities, and increased opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, entrepreneurs, and young people.
Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit delivered the welcoming remarks and called for continued unity and togetherness in advancing Region Two.
The ceremony culminated with the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead. Minister Ramraj took the salute from members of the Joint Services before a parade brought the observances to a dignified and patriotic close.
Among those present were Prime Minister’s Representative Arnold Adams, Regional Executive Officer Deolall Rooplall, Deputy Regional Executive Officer Omesh Sasenaryan, and Regional Commander Khemraj.
