THE village of Cotton Field on the Essequibo Coast was filled with joy and gratitude as Hamidan Bacchus, affectionately known as “Aunty CC,” celebrated her 102nd birthday on Saturday.
A hamper was presented to Aunty CC from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Surrounded by generations of loved ones, Aunty CC marked the extraordinary milestone with a special Muslim prayer service and an intimate family gathering at her home in Region Two.
The atmosphere was one of love, reflection, and celebration as relatives travelled from as far as the United States and Canada to honour the matriarch whose life has touched so many.
Though age has slowed her down and she can no longer do many of the things she once did, Aunty CC continues to enjoy the presence of her children and family, who remain by her side with unwavering love and care.
Born in a time long before modern conveniences, Aunty CC has witnessed more than a century of change, history and growth.
Throughout her life, she raised thirteen children—eleven sons and two daughters—with strength, determination, and faith. Today, her legacy lives on through her thirty-two grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren who continue to cherish her wisdom and affection.
Known in her younger days as a talented seamstress, Aunty CC used her skills to support her family and build a life rooted in dignity and perseverance.
Her life took a difficult turn when her husband, Koda Bacchus, passed away while she was just 53 years old. Despite the hardship, she remained strong and became both mother and father to her children, ensuring they were cared for and guided through life.
A devoted Muslim, Aunty CC continues to live a disciplined and spiritual life. Her day begins at 04:30 hours every morning with prayers, the first of five daily prayers she faithfully observes. She regularly reads the Quran and believes her long life and good health are blessings from Allah, earned through faith, simplicity, and peace of mind.
Her son, Afzal Bacchus, the sixth of her children, spoke fondly about the sacrifices and love his mother gave throughout the years.
“She always made sure we had something to eat, no matter how difficult life became,” he shared. “Some of my happiest memories are travelling with her, just the two of us. I thank Allah every day for allowing her to still be with us.”
Neighbours describe her as warm-hearted and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. When asked what advice she would give to younger generations, her response was simple yet powerful:
“Listen to your parents, stay focused, don’t rush life and always live with purpose.”
At 102 years old, Aunty CC remains deeply loved and respected by her community, a living example of strength, compassion, and enduring faith.
