—Labour Ministry says investigations into workers’ complaints remain ongoing

THE management of EKAA HRIM Earth Resources has committed to paying all outstanding salaries and wages owed to its Indian workers on or before May 27, 2026, according to the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning.

The commitment was made on Friday during an inter-agency meeting convened at the Ministry and led by Minister Keoma Griffith as investigations continue into allegations of labour and occupational safety and health violations involving Indian nationals employed at the company’s Region Seven operations.

In a statement, the ministry said the meeting brought together officials from the Ministries of Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and Human Services and Social Security, along with representatives of the company and the affected workers.

The consultations were led by the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning, while the acting Indian High Commissioner was also present and participated in the discussions.

“During the course of the consultations, the management of EKAA HRIM Earth Resources committed to disbursing all outstanding salaries and wages due, on or before the 27th of May, 2026,” the ministry stated.

According to the ministry, both the company and the workers also raised additional matters during the meeting and have undertaken to provide supporting documentation in the coming week.

The Ministry of Labour emphasised that the process remains ongoing and continues to be guided by due process and compliance with the laws of Guyana.

The investigation stems from complaints made by 37 Indian nationals employed by the company, who alleged poor working and living conditions, long working hours, low wages and issues relating to the handling of their travel documents.

The matter has since drawn the attention of several government agencies, the Guyana Police Force and representatives from the Indian High Commission.
