A 57-year-old boat captain lost his life following a collision between two boats in the Cuyuni River near Tapir Landing on Thursday afternoon.
Dead is Steve Daniels of Kartabo Village, Lower Mazaruni River.
Police said the incident occurred around 12:45hrs and involved a 26-foot wooden boat powered by a 200 HP Yamaha outboard engine and an 18-foot aluminium boat operated by Daniels.
Initial investigations revealed that the larger vessel, operated by a 51-year-old captain of Batavia Village, was travelling in the vicinity of Tapir Landing with four occupants when it reportedly collided with the smaller boat.
As a result of the collision, Daniels and three occupants of the aluminium boat sustained injuries.
Police said Daniels was found motionless following the impact, while one of the occupants suffered serious injuries. The remaining occupants received minor injuries.
The injured were escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where Daniels was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
One injured occupant remains hospitalised in a serious condition, while the others were treated and sent away.
The operator of the 26-foot wooden boat is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
