As Guyana gets ready to travel to neighboring Barbados for their second clash in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) 15’s series in about 2 weeks’ time, President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Ryan Gonsalves says they will intensify their preparation after the naming of the final squad on Saturday.

According to Gonsalves, “We just want to have the final 30 men working together, so we are going to do that this weekend after this trial game. Training has been affected tremendously by the weather; the national park field has been underwater for the last two weeks or more, but we have been training still, even though we are affected by the weather.”
He said they have had to utilize the athletics field in the National Park to ensure they have the requisite practice to compete against the Barbados team.
The GRFU boss said the squad will see some changes as they look to get their campaign off the ground with a victory against their Caribbean neighbors.
“My expectation is that from the Bermuda experience, we already know what we are up against, and we are working on correcting those simple mistakes that cost us the game against Bermuda, so we are up against a Barbados team in form for the last couple of years.”
Guyana has the ability and the resources to deliver, but must execute on the day, the GRFU president said.
“We have a really good side, a young team, so it’s just about the guys pulling it together on the day to take the opportunity that is in front of them; definitely a Guyana team could beat any team on any day; we just have to play structured rugby and stick to the plan and patterns and believe in ourselves.”
Guyana struggled to put away a beatable Bermuda side in their opening game, losing 9–5 after Bermuda scored three penalties.
Winger Lionel Holder gave the hosts an early 5–0 lead with a well-taken try, but Bermuda took advantage of locals mistakes to score three penalties and secure the win.
Guyana travels to Barbados on June 6 before returning home to face Trinidad and Tobago.
