PARENTS working late-night shifts can now do so with greater peace of mind as the government’s pioneering Day and Night Care and Early Childhood Development initiative expands its services to include full night care for children.
The announcement was made at the Anna Catherina Early Childhood Development Centre, Region Three, by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud.
The ministry continues to strengthen childcare support systems for families working non-traditional hours, ensuring children are cared for in safe, nurturing and development-focused environments.
The minister noted that while the day-care component has been progressing successfully, the introduction of the night service now allows parents working evening and overnight shifts to leave their children in a secure environment staffed by trained caregivers.
“So now parents, bring your children, it’s time for night care. We are ready…you can go to work on your shift and know that your children are safe in this beautiful environment,” she stated.
Beyond childcare services, the facility also focuses on early childhood development, ensuring children achieve key developmental milestones through structured learning and care programmes.
The Day and Night Care initiative was first announced by the government in July 2022 as part of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration’s commitment to empowering women, supporting working families, and creating safer spaces for children.
Guyana’s first-ever Day and Night Care and Early Childhood Development Centre was commissioned at Anna Catherina, Region Three, in August 2025, marking a major milestone in childcare services not only in Guyana but across the Caribbean and Latin America.
Since then, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has been working tirelessly to expand the programme nationwide, with additional centres already opened and more planned across several regions to support working parents and promote holistic child development. (DPI)
