–US Congresswoman tells Venezuela; praises Guyana’s economic stewardship

UNITED States Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has issued a strong statement backing Guyana’s sovereignty and sharply criticising Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez over what she described as continued threats against Guyana.
In a post published on X (formerly Twitter), Salazar, who serves as chairwoman of the subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere on the House’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, accused Rodríguez and the Venezuelan administration of attempting to undermine Guyana while praising the country’s management of its growing oil wealth and economic development.
“Delcy thinks she can trick President Trump the same way she and Maduro tricked and destroyed Venezuela,” Salazar wrote.
She further accused the Venezuelan leadership of seeking to “steal territory from a free and sovereign nation like Guyana”.
It was then that Salazar also commended Guyana’s handling of oil revenues.
She said, “They (Guyana) managed their oil wealth responsibly, created a sovereign wealth fund, and saw GDP per capita quadruple in just five years.”
The congresswoman sternly noted that the Venezuelan acting president “should stop threatening Guyana and start learning from it.”
Salazar’s remarks come on the heels of recent hearings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague concerning the longstanding controversy over the Essequibo region.
Guyana has consistently maintained that the matter must be resolved through the ICJ process under international law, while Venezuela has continued to challenge the court’s jurisdiction despite participating in aspects of the proceedings.
During the hearings, Guyana argued that Venezuela’s claims to the Essequibo region threaten the country’s territorial integrity, peace and development.
The ICJ has already issued provisional measures ordering Venezuela to refrain from actions that could alter the status quo in the disputed territory while the case remains before the court.
Guyana has repeatedly maintained that it remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the controversy through the rule of law and the ICJ process.
