A 35-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday evening following a collision with a motor lorry at the junction of the Mandela to Eccles Highway and Rome Access Road, and police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Dead is Andra Jnr Lewis of Guyhoc Park, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Police said the accident occurred at about 18:16 hrs and involved motorcycle CR 5455, which Lewis was riding, and motor lorry GAM 1442, driven by a 24-year-old man of D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice.
According to initial investigations, Lewis was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane of the Mandela to Eccles Highway, while the lorry was travelling east along the northern drive lane of the Rome Access Road.
Investigators said that upon reaching the intersection, the driver of the motor lorry allegedly drove into the path of the motorcycle, resulting in the front of the motorcycle colliding with the left rear side of the lorry.
The impact of the collision left Lewis with severe injuries about his body.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, and the injured motorcyclist was examined by a doctor on duty, who pronounced him dead at the scene.
His body was later escorted to the Davis Memorial Crematorium and Funeral Home Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test was administered to the lorry driver, and no trace of alcohol was found in his system.
The driver remains in police custody as investigators continue their probe into the fatal accident.
