A LIFE of service, resilience, and global impact was celebrated as Essequibo’s beloved centenarian, Madalene Hill, marked her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and well-wishers from near and far.

Born in Good Hope on the Essequibo Coast, Hill’s journey took her beyond Guyana’s shores to England, where she dedicated many years to healthcare. Her work not only supported countless individuals, but also earned her deep admiration and respect within the communities she served. During her time abroad, she travelled extensively, embracing cultures and experiences across the world.

Despite her international journey, Hill eventually returned to Guyana where she lived an active and fulfilling life. Even at 100, she is said to maintain strong cognitive health, a testament to her vibrant spirit and enduring strength.

Affectionately known as “Aunty May” by many in Guyana, Hill is remembered for her kindness and generosity. She played a significant role in nurturing and caring for children during her years in England, leaving a lasting impression on countless lives. Though she has no children of her own, she is surrounded by a large extended family of nieces and nephews who hold her dear.

Relatives shared that Hill is deeply loved and appreciated, not just locally, but also internationally. Persons travelled from various parts of the world to celebrate the milestone  with her, reflecting the far-reaching impact of her life.

Her sister, Marjorie Hill, described her as a loving and compassionate individual who has always put others first. Another sibling, Bill, now 90, also expressed joy at seeing so many people gather to honour her century of life.

The Prime Minister’s Representative, Arnold Adams, was also present at the celebration. He expressed his appreciation in sharing the special moment with the centenarian and extended birthday greetings on behalf of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), wishing her continued health and happiness.

Hill’s century-long journey stands as a powerful reminder of a life well lived—one defined by care, connection, and a legacy that spans generations and continents.
