BERBICE contractor Aubrey David has stepped forward to build a new home for 45-year-old Tricia Wintz of Pepper Street, Glasgow Village, after a devastating fire on Monday left her family of eight homeless.

The blaze completely destroyed the building, leaving Wintz and her relatives in urgent need of assistance.

On Wednesday, during a visit to the fire scene, David handed over essential supplies to the family, which are expected to provide immediate relief as they cope with the aftermath of the fire. During the visit, he also gave the assurance that a new house will be constructed for the family.

David explained that the rebuilding effort is being undertaken on behalf of President Dr Irfaan Ali, who has consistently emphasised support for vulnerable families and swift assistance during times of crisis.

The fire reportedly started around 09:45 hrs at Lot 347, shortly after Wintz left for work. While on duty at the New Amsterdam Town Council where she has been a constable for over ten years, she was alerted that her home had gone up in flames.

“As I reach to work and put down my bag when I get a call… A teacher from my daughter’s school tell me she see smoke and believe it is my house. Right after that, a friend call and tell me to come quick, the house on fire.”

She immediately rushed home where she realised that her six bedroom, two-storey wooden and concrete structure where she resided for some 25 years now was completely englufed in flames. “The furniture, freezer, the fridge, the stove, wares, beds and other stuff, my passports and certificates, everything important is gone…”

Meanwhile, Divisional Fire Officer, Region Six, Clive McDonald, has since confirmed that the fire was deliberately set. According to the woman, one of her sons, who is said to be mentally unstable was at home at the time of the fire.

Following the incident, he was reportedly arrested and later taken to the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital for assessment.

Seven of Wintz’s eight children live with her.  The single parent noted that the loss is overwhelming, but she remains grateful that no lives were lost. Moreso, she expressed relief that her youngest son, who suffers from a disability, was not at home at the time of the fire.

After meeting with David on Wednesday, the woman expressed gratitude to President Ali. “I am so grateful for the help from the President and his team and I am thanking the President and I am so grateful that he reached out to me for building my home and to make myself and my children much comfortable.”
