AS Guyana continues to advance its digital transformation in education, efforts are being intensified to ensure citizens, particularly those in rural and riverine communities, have access to modern learning opportunities.
In Region Six, this push is gaining momentum through the Guyana Digital School, an initiative designed to bridge educational gaps and equip residents with critical skills for a rapidly evolving world.
Regional Chairman of Region Six, Junior Basant, in an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, expressed strong support for the initiative, describing it as a programme he is deeply passionate about due to its potential to expand educational access across the region.
He emphasised that the platform offers valuable resources for students, professionals, and lifelong learners, particularly in an increasingly digital environment.
As such, he urged residents of Berbice to take full advantage of the programmes being offered, noting that participation can enhance skills development, improve employability, and contribute to overall community advancement.
“Having a background in education, I am very excited about the Digital School. It is an initiative by His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali, where you are offered a classroom setting in the comfort of your own home, office, or anywhere with an Internet connection. The Digital School offers comprehensive teaching and learning, and a platform that is up to CXC standard,” Basant said.
According to Basant, the government has ensured that the programme is free and easy to access.
“Signing up is relatively fast and straightforward, and all it takes is filling out a simple form,” he added.
He noted that during his school outreaches across Region Six, he has been encouraging students to sign up for the initiative.
“The government is rolling out these initiatives to make people’s lives better,” he said.
Reflecting on his own experience as a student, Basant said he once sought the kind of support now being offered through such programmes.
“It gives you that extra boost to help you prepare, and now it is being offered free to all Guyanese — parents, students, and those preparing for exams. Take full advantage of the Digital School initiative,” he urged.
Basant stressed that the flexibility of the online platform allows users to learn at their own pace while balancing other commitments.
“Because it is online, it allows you the flexibility to work with your schedule… you can go at your own pace and make life easier,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of the government’s GOAL and GROW scholarship programmes, noting their role in expanding access to tertiary education.
“As someone who had to pay for tertiary education, I can say that persons are not as appreciative as they should be. I want to thank the President for this initiative. Tertiary education is critical for personal development, and through GOAL, you have access to universities around the world. Again, it is free and flexible,” Basant added.
As such, Basant called on residents to utilize the opportunities available to them.
