SENIOR Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, has underscored Guyana’s unprecedented economic growth and called for continued flexibility in international policy guidance during high-level talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Dr Singh met with Nigel Chalk, Director of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund, as he concluded Guyana’s participation in the 2026 Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group in Washington, D.C.
During the discussions, the Finance Minister highlighted Guyana’s “historically unprecedented” economic trajectory, pointing to the government’s firm commitment to ensuring that rapid growth translates into broad-based, inclusive development. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong non-oil economy alongside the country’s expanding petroleum sector, noting that sustained growth must improve the overall wellbeing of all Guyanese.
The meeting also addressed the government’s ongoing push to expand critical infrastructure, which Dr Singh described as essential for diversifying the economy, enhancing competitiveness, and unlocking long-term opportunities for increased trade and regional integration.
As Guyana continues its transformation, Dr Singh urged the IMF to maintain a flexible approach in its policy advice, acknowledging both the evolving global economic environment and the country’s unique pace of growth, one he noted has few modern parallels.
The engagement forms part of Guyana’s broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with international financial institutions while charting a development path that balances rapid expansion with long-term sustainability.
