–families see significant rise in property value as development accelerates, President Ali emphasises
PRESIDENT Dr Irfaan Ali has noted that the government’s investments in infrastructure are not only transforming communities, but also delivering tangible financial benefits, with property values in many areas increasing drastically over a short period.
The Head of State alluded to this while addressing the audience at the commissioning of the Aubrey Barker four-lane road, on Monday.
The President pointed to real examples to demonstrate how public investments are translating into private wealth.

“I asked the Minister of Finance to contact the Chief Valuation Officer and to get for me the latest transactions in this community,” he said, before outlining the figures.
“In 2021, there was a piece of land bought here along this highway for five million Guyana dollars. In 2026, that same piece of land was sold for $38 million… the net value of every family here has gone up, in this case, by more than 700 per cent,” President Ali highlighted.
He added that another property, purchased in 2017 for $23 million with minimal upgrades, was sold in 2026 for $112 million, representing a gain of more than 500 per cent.
“These are real families, real individuals, real Guyanese, who saw their net asset grow by more than 500% in just five years,” the President said.
Dr Ali emphasised that such increases are exceptional by global standards, noting that even modest annual growth is often considered significant.
The President said, “now in any economy in the world where your asset is growing by 10% even every year, they call that miraculous… In five years, you had your net asset growing by an average of 100% annually.”
Against this backdrop, he noted that these gains are not coincidental but are the result of deliberate planning and sustained investment by the government.
“Let us not believe that this era of development is accidental. It is planned, it is thoughtful, and it is deliberate,” he stated.
President Ali explained that infrastructural projects, particularly roads, play a critical role in unlocking economic potential by improving access, attracting investment and increasing the desirability of land.
“Land that was once underutilised becomes attractive for housing and other development. Property value rises, private investment increases and new jobs are created,” he affirmed.
The President further stressed that the impact of improved infrastructure extends beyond real estate, influencing the wider economy by facilitating movement and reducing the cost of doing business.
Dr Ali underscored that the government’s infrastructural drive is part of a broader national development strategy aimed at ensuring long-term prosperity for citizens across the country.
“We are building roads because this is what drives development,” he said.
The President maintained that as these types of investments continue, more communities are expected to experience similar gains, further reinforcing the link between infrastructural expansion and improved quality of life.
