THE Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has opted for stability and a landmark shift in gender representation, re-electing David Fernandes as president during an Annual General Meeting that signalled a new era for the sport.
Fernandes ran unopposed to retain his leadership of an executive body that remains rooted in continuity but has undergone a significant demographic overhaul.
The newly elected board includes more women in key decision-making roles, reflecting a progressive shift in the administration of Guyanese sport.
The leadership team sees Loraine Ince step in as Vice-President, Victoria Arjoon as Secretary, and Ashley DeGroot-Khalil as Treasurer.
The executive is further bolstered by Ashley Khalil (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer), Roseann Bulkan (Junior Affairs), and Tian Edwards (Chairperson of Competitions).
Deje Dias, Owen Verwey, and Alex Arjoon round out the committee.
To be transparent and accountable, the executive has agreed to a one-year term.
This gesture follows last year’s missed AGM and is intended to realign the association with its constitutional mandates.
“We operate less like a rigid organisation and more like a dedicated family,” Fernandes said, reflecting on the election.
He noted that as Guyanese players gain more traction on the international circuit, maintaining a unified internal culture is “essential to safeguarding the sport’s long-term future.”
The GSA enters this term following a transformative 2025, which saw the long-awaited commissioning of new doubles courts.
The expansion brings the total number of public singles courts to five, significantly boosting the training capacity for local athletes.
With the backing of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the GSA is now pivoting its strategy toward a major international milestone: hosting the Pan American Junior Championships in 2027.
