AGRICULTURE Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, on Monday, announced the successful local cultivation and harvesting of approximately 40,000 kilogrammes of onions, describing the achievement as a significant milestone in Guyana’s push to strengthen food security and diversify its agricultural sector.
The onions were produced under a pilot project spanning just four acres, demonstrating the crop’s viability under local conditions.
Building on this success, Minister Mustapha revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing to expand production on a much larger scale, with plans to cultivate approximately 200 acres in the next planting cycle.
He noted that the project has already generated widespread interest among farmers across the country, particularly in Regions Two, Five, Six, and Nine. President Irfaan Ali had previously visited Region Nine during the early stages of harvesting, and since then, more farmers have indicated their willingness to allocate land for onion cultivation.
In a further boost to the initiative, approximately 2,000 bags of onions harvested in Region Nine were transported to Georgetown last Thursday, where the first shipment was purchased by local distributor Abdul Wahab of A. Wahab Imports.
The ministry facilitated market access for the produce, underscoring its commitment to supporting farmers beyond production.
The onion project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance food security both locally and across the Caribbean through targeted investment, innovation, and expanded agricultural participation.
