Region Three private sector praises government’s push for cleaner, healthier communities

HEAD of the Region Three Private Sector Inc. (R3PSInc), Halim Khan, has lauded the Government’s recent distribution of garbage compactor trucks to Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), describing the move as a transformative step toward cleaner communities, improved public health, and stronger economic activity across the region.
The initiative, led by President Dr Irfaan Ali and his administration, saw the handing over of 12 garbage trucks to NDCs in Region Three, ensuring that each council now has its own dedicated waste management vehicle.
The effort forms part of the Government’s broader “care economy” agenda aimed at enhancing quality of life and building sustainable communities.

Khan, in endorsing the initiative, emphasised that proper waste management is critical not only for environmental health but also for economic development.
He noted that cleaner surroundings create more attractive conditions for businesses, investors, and residents alike.
“This is a significant investment in the foundation of our communities,” Khan said. “When waste is managed efficiently, it improves sanitation, reduces health risks, and enhances the overall image of Region Three as a place to live, work, and do business.”
President Ali, during the handing-over ceremony, underscored the importance of building communities through quality infrastructure and collective responsibility.
He highlighted that while development has brought improved roads, drainage, and recreational facilities, unplanned expansion has created new challenges that must be addressed through structured planning and investment.
Khan echoed these sentiments, pointing out that the provision of garbage trucks will support NDCs in maintaining order amid rapid development, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of environmental standards.
The R3PSInc head further welcomed the Government’s wider plans to integrate infrastructural development with social support systems, including the creation of centres of care for children and the elderly, and the transformation of traditional markets into hubs of tourism and family-oriented activity.
“These initiatives signal a holistic approach to development,” Khan added. “It is not just about infrastructure, but about people, creating spaces that are safe, clean, and economically vibrant.”
The Government has already distributed 46 garbage trucks nationwide, covering Regions One, Two, Five, and Six, with plans to extend the programme to all 70 NDCs. In Region Three, the latest distribution follows earlier allocations to Wakenaam and Leguan.
Khan also pointed to the economic opportunities tied to the Government’s parallel push to pre-qualify small contractors for community infrastructure maintenance.
With more than 11,000 applicants nationwide, nearly 1,500 from Region Three, he said the initiative will inject resources directly into local economies while ensuring the upkeep of public spaces.
“This creates jobs, builds capacity among small contractors, and ensures that our infrastructure is maintained consistently,” he said.
Additionally, the President’s plans to develop commercial plazas and regularise roadside vending were welcomed by Khan, who noted that structured business environments would improve safety, organisation, and long-term growth prospects for small enterprises.
He stressed that the combined measures, from improved waste management to business infrastructure, represent a coordinated effort to modernise communities while preserving their functionality and appeal.
“As the private sector, we strongly support policies that enhance the quality of life and create an enabling environment for commerce,” Khan said. “This initiative does exactly that, and its benefits will be felt across every community in Region Three.”
The garbage truck distribution, Khan noted, is a clear demonstration of how targeted investments at the local level can drive national development and improve everyday life for citizens.
