A PRIVATE investor has signalled interest in supporting the construction of a municipal airport in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) in a bid to support emerging industrial opportunities.
This was disclosed by President Dr Irfaan Ali, during his address to residents at the opening of the Guyana–China Friendship Park at Schoonord, on the West Bank of Demerara, Region Three, on Sunday.
There, he spoke at length about ongoing and planned projects in the area. He listed the Del Conte Road, already under construction, and the four-lane road from Crane to Parika, alongside the design work for a four-lane road back to Wales.
He referenced progress on the Sand Hills Road and pointed to new ports and marine facilities expected to bring substantial private investment to the West Demerara corridor.
“We have received a private sector interest in the building out of a municipal airport just like the one in Ogle, right here, in Region Three,” the President disclosed.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation issued a Request for Proposals for the design, construction, and financing of two new municipal airports in Regions Six and Nine.
Back in 2025, President Ali had said that the soon-to-be-constructed municipal airports at Rose Hall, Region Six, and Lethem, Region Nine, will serve as regional hubs going beyond the country’s domestic needs.
The government, he said, is investing heavily in upgrading the country’s aviation infrastructure, building an ecosystem that will support the massive influx of air traffic and regional trade.
Concurrently, investments will be made in ensuring that the country’s human capital is equipped to serve the industry.
