President Dr. Irfaan Ali has expressed strong support for the reappointment of Dr. Carla Barnett as Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Speaking on the sidelines of a welcome home and medal presentation ceremony for Operation Melissa troops at Base Camp Ayanganna, President Ali confirmed his involvement in the process leading to Dr. Barnett’s reappointment.

“I was there when the Secretary-General was appointed the first time, and we did not follow any process that is different from the first time,” he said.

He added, “The matter was discussed in caucus, views were exchanged, and the decision was taken.”

The President underscored the importance of steady leadership within the regional body, signalling Guyana’s full endorsement of Dr. Barnett’s continued tenure at the helm of CARICOM. (NCN)
