PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali’s affirmation of culture as a key part of Guyana’s development strategy is essential for the nation’s ongoing change.

His remarks at Friday’s state reception for regional and local artistes who performed at the Clash of the Titans show, highlighted an important truth: Guyana’s future prosperity will not depend only on oil wells and infrastructure, but also on the rhythms, creativity, and unity driven by its people.

For too long, culture was seen as a nice addition—important for ceremonies but separate from economics. Today, that view is changing rapidly. Under President Ali’s leadership, culture is being seen as both a reflection of our identity and a vital source of growth.

By prioritising the creative industries in the national agenda, the government is showing that investing in the arts is not a luxury—it is essential for nation-building.

The symbolic and practical value of hosting world-class artistes and cultural exchanges is immense. These events, as the President rightly noted, require careful planning, investment, and respect for artistic work.

Beyond logistics, they represent Guyana’s growing confidence and place in the global community. Each performance and collaboration among Caribbean artistes reinforce a story of unity that goes beyond borders, genres, and even competition.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., was right to call culture a “non-replicable national asset.” Guyana’s vibrancy, with its mix of languages, rhythms, and cuisines, is unlike any other place in the world.

As the government continues to diversify the economy, the developing Orange Economy, driven by art, music, fashion, and innovation, stands ready to create new income sources, jobs, and international recognition.

This revival in cultural policy fits perfectly with the broader vision of “One Guyana.” It represents inclusion, pride, and creativity, showing that development is not just about GDP numbers or infrastructure, but also about the shared experiences that connect people.
