Regional Stability

PRESIDENT, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s honest comments on Fox News represent a key moment for Guyana and the wider Caribbean. The security situation in our region is improving, thanks to significant political changes in neighbouring Venezuela.
With Nicolás Maduro’s recent capture, the aggressive rhetoric that once plagued our border has vanished, replaced by real stability.
As President Ali wisely noted, this shift is not just luck; it’s a change in mindset that fosters increased confidence across Latin America and the Caribbean. Guyana, which has remained alert to threats in Essequibo, can now breathe easier, showing that significant geopolitical changes can bring peace when diplomacy fails.
This change goes beyond just words. Venezuela’s early efforts, in line with US agreements, indicate a true move towards economic recovery and democratic values. Less aggressive posturing means growing investors’ trust, which is crucial for countries such as ours, trying to capitalise on oil wealth without the risk of conflict.
President Ali’s message is clear: the push for democracy boosts regional opportunities. Guyana is ready to engage positively, but we must stay firm; real partnerships require genuine reforms, not just empty promises.
We also need to tackle drug cartels that take advantage of our weak borders and Exclusive Economic Zones. These narco-terrorists harm the Caribbean’s reputation and fuel crime and instability.
President Ali’s support for strong measures against transnational threats is right on point; Guyana’s commitment to stronger borders shows the decisive action needed. By breaking down these criminal networks, we can regain our sovereignty and restore our reputation, turning weaknesses into strengths.
Guyana’s leadership under President Ali positions us not as spectators, but as contributors to this renewal. We must take action: strengthen alliances, dismantle cartels, and support democratic progress. The region’s future looks brighter; now we must help it shine.
