The Guyana–Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) has welcomed a strong call by Caribbean leaders for the removal of the United States embargo on Cuba, describing the position as a necessary step toward easing the worsening humanitarian conditions faced by the Cuban people.

In a statement, GCSM President Halim Khan endorsed the declaration issued at the Forty-Eighth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, where regional leaders expressed grave concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Cuba.

The Conference renewed its longstanding appeal for the lifting of the unilateral financial, economic and trade embargo imposed on Cuba by the United States, arguing that the restrictions continue to place significant strain on the country’s economy and its people.

According to Khan, the position taken by Caribbean leaders demonstrates a shared commitment across the region to principles of sovereignty, fairness and humanitarian consideration.

“The Caribbean has consistently spoken with one voice on this matter,” Khan said, noting that the embargo has had far-reaching consequences for the Cuban population, particularly in the areas of healthcare, food security and economic development.

He also supported the Conference’s call for Cuba to be immediately removed from the United States list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, a designation that regional leaders argue further complicates the country’s ability to access international financial systems and essential trade.

The GCSM president emphasized that the Caribbean has historically maintained strong diplomatic and cultural ties with Cuba, with many countries in the region benefiting from Cuban medical cooperation, educational programmes and technical assistance over several decades.

Khan added that regional solidarity on the issue reflects the Caribbean Community’s broader commitment to multilateralism and respect for international law.

The call by Caribbean leaders to end the embargo has been repeated annually in international forums, including at the United Nations, where an overwhelming majority of member states have consistently voted in favour of resolutions urging the United States to lift the decades-old sanctions.

Khan said the Guyana–Cuba Solidarity Movement will continue advocating for an end to the embargo and for policies that support the well-being and development of the Cuban people.
