New streetlights aim to deter crime, improve road safety

– Government accelerates installation

THE Ministry of Public Works has intensified the nationwide rollout of its streetlight initiative, advancing government efforts to strengthen community safety, improve road visibility, and expand economic and social activity after dark.
The programme, which forms part of a broader community enhancement agenda, is currently advancing in several areas, including Enterprise and Annandale North on the East Coast of Demerara. Officials say the installation of additional lighting is aimed at fostering a greater sense of security among residents while discouraging criminal activity in public spaces.
In February, the ministry committed to installing 192 streetlights across the community of Enterprise to bolster safety. To date, 60 lights have been successfully erected in Sections ‘C’ and ‘D’, with works continuing in other sections. Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has also pledged that Annandale North will be fully illuminated within weeks as the initiative accelerates.
Residents have welcomed the development, describing it as both timely and necessary. Lavina Williams said the lights would brighten the community and enhance safety, calling it “a good initiative.” Wizie Prabhu noted that improved lighting is especially needed in North and South Annandale, where evening robberies have been a concern. Recalling a recent incident, Prabhu said the initiative is particularly important for persons commuting home from work at night. Another resident, Runell Parsaram, expressed the view that increased lighting would deter loitering and criminal activity in vulnerable areas.
The streetlight programme aligns with commitments first outlined by President Irfaan Ali in 2023, when he spoke of plans to modernise and modify communities nationwide through enhanced infrastructure.
The administration subsequently announced in September last year that approximately 100,000 streetlights would be installed across Guyana to improve road safety and reduce accidents, while also discouraging crime.
According to the ministry, improved lighting not only enhances public safety but also supports small businesses and community life by enabling residents to engage in outdoor activities with greater confidence. The ongoing works are part of a wider infrastructure drive aimed at upgrading public spaces and improving quality of life at the community level.
Authorities have indicated that installations will continue in phases across various regions as the government advances its national target, underscoring its commitment to safer, brighter communities throughout Guyana.
