POLICE have launched an investigation into a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 69-year-old woman on Tuesday evening along Industry Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the collision occurred at about 17:50hrs on the northern carriageway and involved motorcycle CR 523, ridden by a 29-year-old man of Owen Street, Kitty, and carrying a 28-year-old female pillion rider, as well as pedestrian Anjanie Mohabir of Block 8 Mon Repos, who later succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle was travelling east along the roadway on the pedestrian walkway at a time when vehicles proceeding in the same direction had reportedly stopped to allow Mohabir to cross. A collision subsequently occurred between the motorcycle and the pedestrian.
All three individuals sustained injuries and were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they received medical attention. Mohabir died while undergoing treatment. The pillion rider remains admitted for observation, while the motorcyclist was treated and later discharged.
Police said CCTV footage from the area has been identified and will be obtained as part of the ongoing probe. A breathalyser test administered to the driver detected no trace of alcohol.
The motorcycle has been impounded as investigations continue, and the driver is currently in police custody assisting investigators.
Authorities have urged road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution, particularly along busy public roadways, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue.
