–East Bank beat U/Demerara at Police
ON the back of three half-centuries, Georgetown roared to their second consecutive victory when they whipped East Coast by 180 runs at LBI Ground on East Coast Demerara in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association 50 overs U-19 tournament.
At LBI, Georgetown reached 300-5 when the allotted 50 overs expired in hot conditions before dismissing the home side for 119 in 34.4 overs.
Watched by a fair-size gathering, Kush Seegobin hammered seven fours and five sixes in his entertaining 80 from 76 balls, and shared in a 61-run first-wicket stand with Kishan Silus (18) before Arun Gandia bowled the later.
Seegobin and Emmauel Lewis (14) carried the score to 95 before Lewis was dismissed.
Trilok Nanan removed Seegobin, who was looking set to score the tournament’s second century, and his demise brought 16-year-old West Indies U-19 left-hander Shamar Apple to join Jonathan Mentore, son of former U-19 opener Alfred Mentore.
The pair played some enterprising shots before Gainda struck, trapping Apple for a pugnacious 51, decorated with five boundaries, which included a huge six to leave Georgetown on 224-4, breaking their 89-run partnership.
Dhanesh Persaud hit three fours and a six in his 32 before he fell to Jude Andrews at 296-5.
Skipper Dave Mohabir (3) and Mentore, who was unbeaten on an explosive 78 from 33 balls with eight fours and a six, saw the visitors reach the first 300 total in the five-team tournament.
Gainda had 2-38 from East Coast, who, though given a solid 73-run foundation by openers Jannick Newton and Junia Dindyal, ended up crumbling.
Mohabir broke the partnership when he bowled Dindyal, who had four fours, for 19.
Reyad Latif was the architect of destruction, and had Newtown, three runs later, for the first of his many scalps.
And when Munesh Outar fell for 14 at 94-3, the last seven wickets fell for 24 runs.
Latif had 7-21, and was supported by Evaldo Perriera, who took 2-12.
In the other game in the city, Upper Demerara, comprising of several non-Region Ten players, were bowled out for 72 in 18.4 overs as Errol Alder and Tyric Henry top- scored with 16 each.
Nathan Bishop, who scored a ton for Georgetown in the Inter-Association U-16 tournament, could only manage six, while Extras contributed 17.
Off-Spinner Joshua Budram continued his good form in this tournament with the ball, bagging 4-3, while Ravindra Singh had 3-22.
East Bank reached 73-3 from 18 overs despite losing three batters, including Skipper Budram (0) at 1-0, Shane Kissoondeo (10) at 25-2, and Shane Shivbarran (15) at 62-3.
Dilshan Latchman, who made 29 not-out with three fours, and Hutson, finished the game with a six off Andy Ramgooland’s first ball to end on seven.
