LOCAL Government and Regional Development Minister, Priya Manickchand, has disclosed the government’s decision to purchase a specially equipped disability bus after being pressed by the parliamentary opposition during the Committee of Supply.

Minister Manickchand explained that the bus is intended to serve children with special education needs in the Moruca sub-region, Region One, describing it as part of a broader national shift in how the country supports learners with disabilities.

The vehicle will be fitted with a hydraulic lift and supported by five outboard engines, improving access to education for children attending schools at Saint Nicholas, Kamwatta, and several other remote communities.

The minister highlighted ongoing investments in special education, noting the recent opening of the country’s first disability school in Region Three, the imminent launch of the first deaf school, and budgetary provisions for the first autistic school through the Ministry of Education.

In addition to the bus and engines, five shed boats will also be procured for the Moruca sub-region to further strengthen transport for learners with special needs.

The region will receive some $9.1 billion for this and other massive projects.

Meanwhile, the House cleared a wider $36.7 billion for the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.

Included in this sum are funds to improve garbage disposal and rehabilitate and support the building out of new green and municipal market spaces.
