IN a significant move to advance basketball in the Caribbean, the Schools Basketball Committee has officially launched the inaugural Schools Basketball League (SBL), a coach-led initiative aimed at elevating playing standards and increasing competition for youth athletes.
Guided by the philosophy that “exposure leads to composure,” the league aims to bridge the gap between grassroots training and high-level international competition.
By shifting away from traditional knockout formats, the SBL provides a structured, long-term competitive environment essential for skill retention and tactical maturity.
The inaugural season, scheduled to run from January 16 to March 22, features a pilot programme of six prestigious secondary institutions: Government Technical Institute (GTI), President’s College, Marian Academy, St. Stanislaus College, Queen’s College and St. Rose’s High School.
The competition will utilise a home-and-away format, guaranteeing each team 10 matches.
This increased frequency of play is a cornerstone of FIBA’s developmental goals, ensuring that young players spend more time in game-time situations to refine their decision-making.
The league has received the full endorsement of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), with Vice President Jermaine Slater emphasising that the project is a vital step toward a sustainable national programme.
“The federation and association fully approve and support this,” Slater said. “It is an important step forward for school basketball and youth development, helping to improve the overall level of play among students.”
Technical Director Warren Wilson noted that the league’s impact extends beyond the players.
The SBL will serve as a training ground for match officials, with a dedicated programme for first-time referees and scorekeepers—a move designed to build the technical capacity required to host future international events.
In alignment with modern sports standards, the SBL will incorporate digital tools to enhance the experience for athletes and scouts.
Players will have access to real-time scores and individual performance statistics, fostering a data-driven approach to player development.
Through a partnership with NexGen Sports, a “Game of the Week” will be streamed live, providing unprecedented exposure for Guyanese prospects to international scouts and stakeholders.
While the pilot programme is currently centred in the capital, the long-term vision involves a nationwide expansion and a national playoff system.
