THE road to the GFF Super 16 trophy just got a lot narrower for everyone not named GDF or Slingerz.
Friday night at the National Training Facility was less of a quarterfinal round and more of a coronation for the tournament’s heavy hitters.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC and Elite League champions Slingerz FC put on a masterclass in clinical finishing, steamrolling their opposition to lock in a massive Monday night doubleheader at Providence.
With a G$2,000,000 grand prize on the line for New Year’s Day, the ‘Big Four’ are now officially on a collision course.
The Determinators hung tough for 30 minutes, deploying a disciplined “park the bus” strategy that kept the score level.
But once Stephon McDonald found the net in the 33rd minute, the floodgates didn’t just open—they burst.
Shemar Scott and Makhaya Jarvis both bagged braces, while Jeffrey Pereira and Jaden Harris joined the party late.
GDF’s relentless high press and superior conditioning were on full display as they hung four goals on the scoreboard in the final quarter-hour.
For Slingerz FC, Raushan Ritch’s early strike set the tone for a night where Slingerz never looked out of second gear.
Kelsey Benjamin doubled the lead just before the half, effectively killing any hope of a Berbice-based comeback.
The second half was a showcase in game management. Slingerz controlled the tempo, eventually adding late insurance through Kemar Beckford and the veteran Cardel Benbow.
The Super 16 is entering the money round. On January 1, the winner of this gauntlet will walk away with a G$2,000,000 payday.
The runners-up and third-place finishers will take home G$1,000,000 and G$750,000, respectively, while the fourth-place side will earn $500,000.
Monday’s double-header at Providence will see Western Tigers FC face the formidable GDF FC from 18:30 hours followed by a high-stakes encounter between Slingerz FC and Guyana Police Force FC from 21:00 hours.
