GUYANA’S Lady Jags fell 3-1 to a disciplined Nicaragua side in their CONCACAF Women’s Qualifier opening match on Monday evening.
The defeat at the National Track and Field Facility immediately puts Guyana, the second-highest ranked team in Group B, under pressure in the competitive qualification bracket.
The Lady Jags struggled to overcome early defensive miscues, allowing Nicaragua to seize control of the first half.

Guyana equalised when Annalisa Vincent scored with a towering header in the 18th minute. However, Nicaragua regained the lead before half-time through a solo effort from Nuria Marquez, and Doriana Aguilar sealed the 3-1 victory early in the second half.
Nicaragua, which already defeated Antigua and Barbuda 4-0, secured their second vital win in the group.
The result leaves the Lady Jags (CONCACAF Rank 12) facing an immediate uphill climb in Group B.
Only the group winner will advance to the 2026 Concacaf Women Championship, which serves as the final qualification stage for both the World Cup and the Olympics.
Guyana must now chase regional powerhouse Jamaica (Rank 5) and keep pace with Nicaragua (Rank 18).
The Lady Jags’ next crucial fixture is a home game against Dominica in February 2026, where they will desperately need to secure three points to keep their qualification hopes to the next stage alive.
