NOW around the tournament’s halfway stage, the intensity is brimming in the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Women’s Division One League.
The race for the top spot is on and though they were made to fight tooth and nail for it, the Guyana Police Force’s Women now occupy the coveted spot; following a 3-0 victory against Mainstay Goldstars FC on Wednesday night.
Mainstay quite literally stunned their opponents, holding them nil- all at half time after shutting down all of their advances. However, a few changes by head Coach Vurlon Mills for Police at the half, brought favour almost immediately when Alleia Alleyne found the back of the net in the 36th minute.
One minute later, Shanic Thornhill was able to slip one past the keeper for Police’s second. In contrast to all of their high- scoring victories thus far in the competition; Police was only able to produce one more goal when teenaged Lezandra Henrito sent a rebound shot back into the right corner of the goal for their 3rd in the 57th.
Also on Wednesday night, Santos FC, after being at a one- goal deficit, flipped the script to defeat Den Amstel FC 5-1. Afeena Baptiste was the shooter to watch, registering a hattrick in the 24th, 42nd and 58th minutes. Tyneisha Thorne fought off several of Den Amstel’s defenders to slot the ball into the nets under a diving keeper in the 48th minute and then Gabriel Rivera’s long shot from outside the box, pierced the nets in the 54th minute.
Thirteen-year-old Kelly Ann Ellis had earlier broken the ice in the encounter, registering Den Amstel’s consolation in the 18th.
The Guyana Police Force are now at the top of the Women’s Division One League points table with 18 points from 6 wins in as many games while the Guyana Defence Force have 15 points from 5 wins in as many games. In third place is Santos FC with 9 points from three wins and two losses in 5 games. Both Fruta Conquerors FC (two wins, one draw, two losses) and River’s View FC (two wins, one draw, one loss) have 7 points but the Tucville- based outfit sit higher at fourth on the account of goal difference.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC will have the opportunity to unseat Police’s Women and reassume the top spot when they go into action today, Friday, October 17; taking on Monedderlust FC from 18:30 hours. Then at 19:30 hours, Western Tigers will battle River’s View FC; both at the GFF’s National Training Centre (NTC) at Providence.
