The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has formally requested a recount in part of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

The request was disclosed by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Commissioner and PPP/C representative Sase Gunraj, via Facebook.

All ten electoral districts have now been officially declared.

Region Four, Guyana’s largest and most politically influential district, delivered a historic outcome in these elections. For the first time in the country’s political history, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured victory in the stronghold long dominated by the People’s National Congress (PNC) and its successor coalition, APNU.

According to official returns, the PPP/C garnered 87,536 votes in the General Elections and 87,018 votes in the Regional Elections. APNU trailed with 46,956 votes (General) and 46,772 votes (Regional).

Political newcomer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) also made significant inroads, earning 41,607 votes in the General and 41,930 in the Regional Elections, a showing that drew heavily from APNU’s traditional base.

Smaller parties, including the Alliance for Change (AFC), Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), and Forward Guyana Movement, captured smaller shares.

Overall, 182,209 valid votes were cast in the General Elections and 182,725 in the Regional Elections in Demerara-Mahaica.
