Opposition in disarray ahead of elections as ‘collab’ with WIN backfires

–Dr. Jagdeo says

WITH just a few days to go before the General and Regional Elections, People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has taken note of the political miscalculation by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) that has left the party frantically fighting for its survival.

During a press conference on Thursday at Freedom House, Dr. Jagdeo was questioned by the Guyana Chronicle regarding the APNU stating that United States (U.S.) sanctioned businessman, Azruddin Mohamed’s political party-We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) is aligned to the PPP/C.

Unlike the opposition, the PPP General Secretary stated that the PPP/C has been critical of WIN’s criminality.

Dr. Jagdeo highlighted how the APNU’s plan to silently embrace the WIN party, in hopes of affecting the PPP/C’s support base has backfired.

He also questioned whether APNU’s latest attempt to criticise the WIN party is just another ploy because, according to him, “most people in the People’s Progressive Party’s base understand that WIN will collaborate with APNU and that is why they have not criticised them, you know this instinctively, people in Guyana are not stupid.”

The PPP General Secretary pointed to the silence from the APNU, regarding the criminality of the WIN party in the previous months and contrasted it with their recent accusations of corruption among other attacks at the political party.

Dr. Jagdeo further indicated how critical WIN has been of the PPP/C, even promoting the untruth that it is the current government that placed the sanctions on the Mohamed family.

He further noted that WIN has also stayed clear of criticising the previous APNU+ Alliance For Change (AFC) administration, in spite of the previous coalition’s attempt to hijack democracy and their disastrous policies.

“So, they never criticise APNU or AFC. And APNU for four months, did not say a word about them and Norton was saying up to three weeks ago he’ll reserve his criticism. Well, we’re four days away from the elections. So clearly the numbers, their original calculation that a collaboration with WIN could see the PPP be a minority government, I think maybe they’ve had other advice now that the PPP is going to win the majority and significantly so.

“And they’re now fighting back for their own position in terms of how much seats they share with WIN,” the PPP General Secretary said.

Based on the current comments and proclamations by the APNU, Dr. Jagdeo said that the opposition is in disarray.

There were clear indications that APNU was hoping WIN would pressure the PPP/C’s strongholds, but instead, according to critics, it has laid bare the desperation within the APNU camp, as prominent figures along with party supporters are abandoning ship, all while the PPP/C maintains its strength.

As seen on Nomination Day last month, the opposition’s plan to peel away at the PPP/C’s votes has gone south, as the faces of many former APNU executives and party supporters were spotted in WIN’s crowd.

Also, WIN’s candidate list submitted to the Guyana’s Elections Commission (GECOM) on Nomination Day further reflected APNU’s massive loss, as former APNU+AFC parliamentarians have appeared on the U.S.-sanctioned businessman political party’s list.
