Driver dies after ignoring stop sign at Mocha intersection

A 64-year-old motorist was killed early Wednesday morning after he reportedly ignored a STOP sign and line at the intersection of the Eastern Carriageway of Heroes Highway and the Mocha Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Charles Richards, of Lot 31 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown, who was driving motor car #PAH 7906 at the time of the crash.

Police said Richards was proceeding east along the Mocha Main Access Road at about 05:30 hrs when he failed to comply with the traffic signs at the junction and drove into the path of a southbound lorry, #GAH 9771, driven by 29-year-old Arif Haniff of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara. The two vehicles collided, leaving Richards with severe head injuries and other trauma.

“As a result of the crash, both vehicles were damaged. The driver of the car received injuries to his head and other parts of his body. The Ambulance Service was summoned to the scene, which arrived shortly after with a team of Emergency Medical Technicians, who checked and examined the driver of the car and pronounced him dead at the scene of the accident.

“The body of the deceased was then escorted by the Police to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where the body was kept for cold storage awaiting a post-mortem examination,” the police said in a release.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. The lorry driver was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution and a breathalyser test conducted on him showed no trace of alcohol. He is presently in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
