REGION Two was a proud showcase of national unity and patriotism on Sunday, May 25, as residents gathered in large numbers at Anna Regina Car Park, Supenaam Waterfront, and Charity to observe Flag Day in celebration of Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary.
The early morning events formed part of the Government of Guyana’s ‘Flag Days’ initiative, aimed at encouraging nationwide participation in raising and displaying the Golden Arrowhead—a symbol of Guyana’s sovereignty, strength and shared destiny.

At all three venues, residents from all walks of life proudly waved their national flags, some dressed in the colours of the flag, others decorating their cars, bicycles and storefronts.
Residents formed a Guyana map and sang patriotic songs, the chanting of national slogans, and spontaneous moments of joy and pride.
Children waved hand-held flags, elders reminisced on Guyana’s journey and entire families turned out in solidarity.
At the heart of the Anna Regina observance was a stirring address by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, who delivered a strong and emotional call for national unity and border defence.
“Essequibo belongs to all of Guyana and Guyana is standing on the right side of history,” the Minister declared to resounding applause.
She used the occasion to confront the ongoing territorial controversy being propagated by neighbouring Venezuela, stressing that no foreign power will divide or intimidate the people of Guyana.
“Let me be clear: no external force can take Essequibo. This land is ours—by history, by law, and by the will of our people,” Minister Parag stated firmly.
“Guyanese stand in solidarity, and we are not alone. The international community sees the truth. We are strong, and we are united.”
She also took time to commend the Joint Services, who play a critical role in protecting Guyana’s borders, saying their commitment is a reflection of national strength and perseverance.
“Our servicemen and women are out there every day standing guard—not just for Essequibo, but for all of Guyana. They are our heroes. And I assure you, there is no way Venezuela will take what is rightfully ours,” she added.

Meanwhile, at Supenaam Waterfront, residents formed themselves in a group in the shape of Guyana flag. Prime Minister Representative, Arnold Adams, engaged the residents there.
The spirit of the community was high, as the Prime Minister Representative encouraged residents to reflect on what independence means and to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for it.
At Charity, the vibrant crowd was addressed by Regional Vice Chairman, Humace Oodit.

Many residents took the opportunity to speak out, expressing deep pride in their identity as Guyanese and their determination to protect their land.
The combined events across the coast created a powerful display of patriotism, resilience and unity, with Region Two standing tall as a proud example of national consciousness and civic participation.
As the Golden Arrowhead fluttered over the Essequibo sky, the message was unmissable, Guyana is sovereign, united and strong—and the people of Region Two are ready to defend that with unwavering pride.
