THE People’s Youth Organisation (PYO) officially launched its much-anticipated Tapeball Cricket Tournament on Sunday, May 12, 2025, bringing together 21 dynamic teams from across Region Two.
This spirited competition aims to spotlight young talent, community unity, and the vibrant culture of Essequibo.
In a unique move to foster youth development, each participating team is required to field at least two Under-19 players in every match.
This ensures that budding cricketers are given a platform to showcase their skills while gaining valuable exposure and experience.
The launch event saw the presence of several key figures, including Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oudit, Head of the PYO Faraz Baksh, Regional Sports Organiser Wazeeda Bacchus, and Head of the PYO Sports Committee and Tournament Organiser Azizi Christiani.
In his remarks, Vice Chairman Humace Oudit praised the initiative as a meaningful investment in the region’s youth. “This tournament is a platform for engagement, camaraderie, and healthy competition. It brings our communities together and reflects the true spirit of ‘One Guyana’—where everyone has a place and a role,” he said.
Tournament Organiser Azizi Christiani shared details on the format and objectives of the competition. “We are excited to host what promises to be a tournament filled with quality matches and fierce competition,” he stated. Christiani also extended heartfelt gratitude to title sponsor Harischan Ramballi for his support, and acknowledged the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture for his continued investment in youth initiatives across the region.
The tournament will bowl off on Saturday, May 17, and continue on May 18 and May 24.
In the first round, Royal Strikers will play Providence Vipers, Evolution takes on Charity, Health Warriors play Renegades, Aurora Knight Riders vs Wakapao, Burikilli Jaguars vs Franchise 11, Team Royals – Bye, United Crew vs New Road Titans, Affiance vs Reliance, PCA Fishermen vs Advanced Construction/Solution, Jaguars vs Aurora Mavericks and Queenstown vs Capoey.
The PYO Tapeball Tournament is not only a celebration of cricket but also a commitment to empowering the next generation and fostering stronger, united communities across Region Two.
