IN a significant step toward enhancing energy access and improving livelihoods in remote communities, the Government of Guyana has distributed more than 200 solar systems to households at Hosororo, Region One.
The initiative is part of the ongoing Hinterland Electrification Programme, which aims to expand the use of renewable energy and promote energy security across the hinterland.
The distribution exercise was led by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, alongside Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley and Regional Executive Officer Sewchand. A representative from the Guyana Energy Agency also participated in the exercise. This latest phase specifically targeted residents who had not benefited from previous distributions.
While the region already has access to electricity, the addition of solar panels is expected to provide more reliable and sustainable energy to hundreds of households. This is particularly beneficial for supporting daily activities and advancing educational opportunities for children.
Among the beneficiaries was Ms Celeste Cedino, who expressed gratitude, stating that the solar system would greatly assist her grandchildren in using electronic devices for their studies. Mr Nigel Peters, another resident, lauded the government for its consistent efforts to uplift hinterland communities.
Minister Croal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equitable development, emphasising that initiatives such as these are part of a broader strategy to ensure that all Guyanese, regardless of location, have access to essential services.
During the visit, residents were also given the opportunity to voice concerns. One of the main issues raised was the local water supply. In response, Minister Croal announced that a new water-supply system is currently being developed for Hosororo to provide more consistent access. He also noted that two
secondary schools in the area will soon be equipped with dedicated water systems to support a better learning environment.
The solar distribution initiative is set to continue across other communities in Region One over the coming days, as the government remains focused on building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
