Free Tertiary Education

HISTORY is not just made in grand speeches and national parades—it is also written in the quiet revolution of policy, in decisions that ripple through generations. With the commencement of the 2025/26 academic year, Guyana has turned a transformative page in its educational journey: tuition at the University of Guyana is now officially free.

This landmark move by the Government of Guyana, fulfilling a key promise of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), marks a bold and visionary leap toward educational equity and national development. As of January 1, 2025, thousands of students—both new and continuing—across all UG campuses and its expanding digital platforms can pursue Diplomas, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and even Doctoral degrees without the burden of tuition fees.

This policy is more than a financial reprieve; it is an invitation. An invitation for young minds preparing for CSEC and CAPE to dream bigger. An invitation for working adults to return to their studies. An invitation for every Guyanese to re-imagine what’s possible, regardless of economic background.
Already, the momentum is palpable. With over 1,200 applications processed weekly, interest is soaring. The government has backed this enthusiasm with tangible support—allocating $13.1 billion in the 2025 National Budget to the University of Guyana and advancing the phased cancellation of student

loan debt. Nearly $204 million in loans for 346 graduates have already been forgiven, with an ambitious target of $11 billion in total relief planned for over 12,000 Guyanese.
Beyond UG, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) continues to widen the horizon, awarding scholarships to nearly 30,000 citizens for online studies — both locally and internationally. Together, these initiatives signify not just access, but advancement—breaking the cycles of poverty and unlocking human potential on a national scale.

UG, now with over 180 programmes across 80+ disciplines and internationally-recognised faculties, stands as a beacon of possibility. Its blend of face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats—delivered through eight academic divisions and ten research institutes—positions it as not just a national treasure, but a regional powerhouse.
The call to action is clear: Apply. Engage. Be part of the movement. Whether you’re a school-leaver awaiting exam results or a professional seeking a second chance, UG is opening its doors wider than ever. With provisional acceptance available and the ability to send CXC results directly, barriers are being dismantled in real time.

This is more than education reform—it is a redefinition of what Guyana values, and where it is headed. As the university continues to share information through its official website, Facebook page, SRMS portal, and media partners, it does so with a renewed purpose: to educate, to uplift, and to empower.
In this Editorial, we celebrate not just a policy, but a promise kept—and a future re-imagined. Guyana is investing in its people. And that is a story worth telling.
