Man jailed for two years, fined $800, 000 for attempted ATM fraud

TULSIE Ramprashad from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, who was arrested on October 28, 2023, at the Citizens Bank automated teller machine (ATM) outlet at OMG on Sheriff Street and Campbell Avenue, Georgetown, with four blank cards, was sentenced on Friday in absentia to two years imprisonment.

Police said in a release that on November 1, 2023, he was charged with the offence of possession of illegal devices (blank cards with magnetic strips), contrary to Section 8(2)(a) of the Cyber Crime Act 16/2008.

He appeared before Her Worship the Chief Magistrate Ms. Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate Court 1, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded ‘not guilty’ and was remanded.

He was subsequently granted bail in the sum of $300, 000 and the matter was transferred to the Georgetown Magistrate Court 6 for trial.

On Friday, March 21, 2025, Her Worship Ms. Orinthia Schmidt, who presides at the Georgetown Magistrate Court 6, found him guilty of the abovementioned charge and was sentenced in absentia to two (2) years imprisonment together with a fine of $800,000.
