DHANPATTIE Rampersaud is heartbroken following the tragic road accident that claimed the life of her youngest child, Jainarine Rampersaud. The 18-year-old died 14 days after the accident, without regaining consciousness, at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Relating her story, Rampersaud told the Pepperpot Magazine that on October 27, 2024, she was at home when she received a telephone call from her son’s phone. However, the caller was not her child. Instead, it was a man who identified himself as the driver of the motorcar allegedly involved in an accident with her son’s motorcycle. He asked her to go to the Rose Hall Police Outpost, stating there had been an accident.

When she arrived, Rampersaud found two female officers and one male officer at the outpost. She enquired about her son’s whereabouts and was told to take the injured pillion rider to the hospital. At the time, she was unaware that her son was critically injured and lying in the trunk of the car involved in the accident.
Rampersaud, determined to find out where her son was, demanded answers. She was then told that he was in the car’s trunk. He was transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital, unresponsive and with multiple injuries.

The grieving mother recounted that when she saw her son, his body appeared broken in many places. She also noticed visible marks that seemed to be from a cutlass, as though he had been beaten even after the accident.

Rampersaud explained that her son had been wearing a gold band, carrying money in his pockets, and had his mobile phone with him—all of which were missing. The accident occurred near a Chinese supermarket in Hampshire Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

“I am still seeking answers as to what transpired, what really happened that night. I believe he was the victim of foul play, and the truth isn’t being told. Because we are poor people, we cannot get justice for my son, who supported our home. He was employed as a mechanic, contributing to society—not a nobody with no future, but an altogether good person,” she lamented.
Rampersaud added that her son was transferred to GPHC, where he spent 14 days. He woke up only once, screaming, “No, please don’t beat me, call my mother, please,” before lapsing into unconsciousness again. He died on November 7, 2024.

Jainarine, who had celebrated his 18th birthday on September 4, 2024, was the youngest of six children. He lived with his mother at Area R Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
Rampersaud claims that despite seeking answers from the police, she encountered significant delays. Even with the post-mortem, issues arose, and she only learned the cause of death on November 22, 2024. The post-mortem revealed that her son had died due to multiple injuries.

While waiting for the paperwork, the family held an 18-night wake before the funeral. After the funeral, pieces of the incident began coming together through photos, text messages, and videos shared by bystanders who had recorded the events of the night. Despite this, no justice has been served to the individuals involved.

According to reports, two teenagers were hospitalised following the accident involving their motorcycle and a car in Hampshire, Corentyne, Region Six. The injured teens were identified as Jainarine Rampersaud and 15-year-old pillion rider Stephon Verrapen, both from Port Mourant.

The car driver allegedly claimed the motorcycle rear-ended his vehicle before fleeing the scene. However, reports indicate that the driver, armed with a cutlass, pursued the motorcycle, causing it to crash. Both teenagers fell to the roadway and sustained injuries, with Jainarine reportedly assaulted by the driver after the accident.

Initially, the teenagers were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Jainarine was subsequently moved to GPHC, where he remained unresponsive until his death.

Commander of Regional Police Division #6, Senior Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed, in an initial report, that the driver was in custody and assisting with the investigation. However, calls and text messages to Commander Bacchus for updates on the case remain unanswered.
