AT just 14 years old, Queens College scholar Yeshua Hutson is proving that age is no barrier to academic excellence.
His extraordinary journey from high school to tertiary education has captured the admiration of many, as he embarks on a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at the University of Guyana—an achievement few would dare to dream of at his age.
In an interview, Yeshua expressed immense pride in his accomplishments, particularly passing this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations with flying colours—earning four grade ones and one grade two in subjects such as Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM), English A, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Principles of Business. Reflecting on his success, he attributed much of it to the support of his family and friends. “I couldn’t have done it without them. I’m excited and very happy about the new journey I’m embarking on,” he shared.
Interestingly, Yeshua didn’t set out to take the CSEC exams early, but made the decision based on his career goals.
“I wanted an early start because I’m currently pursuing my Bachelor’s in Computer Science,” he explained. His long-term plan is to further his studies abroad, aiming for a multidisciplinary Master’s degree in England—a four-year programme that blends multiple disciplines and provides him with an edge over traditional Master’s courses.
Despite his academic success, the path wasn’t easy. Yeshua described the early months of his preparation as challenging, balancing third-form coursework, additional lessons, and long study hours. “I sometimes had lessons from 4 PM to 10 PM, tackling fifth-form material, while still managing assignments and homework from my regular classes,” he recounted. The young scholar credited his parents for their unwavering support, helping him manage the stress of his intense workload. He also emphasised the role his faith played during this period, saying, “When I felt like I couldn’t go on, I would say a silent prayer. Jesus helped me push through and retain what I studied.”
Yeshua’s ability to navigate such an accelerated path in education is not without recognition. In 2023, he received a partial scholarship through the Emirates SA competition, which took him to Oxford University in England for a two-week programme in engineering. Earlier this year, he traveled to Silicon Valley to study Artificial Intelligence at Berkeley University, a top institution renowned for robotics and mechanical engineering.
One of his greatest sources of inspiration comes from his father, who earned his doctorate in 2019. Watching his father’s hard work motivated Yeshua to push through the challenges of his studies and pursue excellence. For Yeshua, belief in one’s self is paramount. “If you have the ability, you should do it,” he encouraged, noting that despite doubts from a few, he knew he was capable of achieving his goals.
Offering advice to others, Yeshua emphasised the importance of support from both parents and teachers. “Parents should encourage and push their children to accomplish everything they want to,” he added.
With a bright future ahead, Yeshua Hutson is a shining example of perseverance, ambition, and the rewards of hard work—an inspiration to young students everywhere.
