LOCAL musician, Stephon Corbin, better known by his stage name, ‘Stehigh’, has made a name for himself in the world of dancehall music.
With hits like ‘Nuh Regular’, ‘How yuh feel’, and ‘No Complaining’, the versatile artiste managed to win the hearts of many fans through his music. He hails from Meadowbrook in Georgetown and is only 25 years old.
He recently shared that he began singing at a young age in church, and was eventually placed to lead the choir. Living next door to another musician, young Stehigh was inspired and that fuelled his passion for music.
Although it has only been three years, Stehigh related that his journey in music in Guyana has been nothing short of exciting. He has been exposed to different crowds, and has performed on big stages locally.
He explained, “I met BNick, actually he called me to come and do some music with Timeless. And from then to now, (it’s been like a year already), from then to now, everything has totally changed. I’ve already performed on like three big stages [and] travelled from here to Region One. So, it’s been a whole totally different swing from then to now,”
Earlier this year, he was one of the artistes who performed at ENET’s ‘Unforgettable’ concert, which featured international recording artiste Burna Boy. Stehigh has also performed at the Guyana Cup, and Summer Swing.
The young musician used the opportunity during the interview with Buzz to encourage any young person who is interested in pursuing music, or thinks that they have the ability to make music, to do so.
He remarked briefly: “I want the chance, for when people say Guyanese artistes or Guyanese music, you mustn’t just think about the trash music that you’ve been hearing all the time. You must actually think about some, at least two, three artistes, that yeah you know those men [are] good Guyanese artistes…that these men [are] more than just Guyanese artistes, these men international.”
He firmly believes that there is room in the Guyanese music industry for growth. In this regard, he pointed out that, “we don’t have a structured industry. To my knowledge we don’t have a structured industry. So actually, people just doing music and releasing music, and we don’t have the copyright laws. We don’t have somewhere (like) a registry that we can actually register the music and have it copyrighted properly and that stuff. So, it’s got a lot more to go, but we’re on our way there.”
Stehigh’s contributions to the Guyanese music culture and music in general have not gone unnoticed. The young man was recently nominated for ‘Best Male Dancehall Artiste of the year’ for the Demroc Music Awards.
He revealed that he will be releasing an EP (extended play) before the end of this year, so fans can look out for that.
Additionally, he mentioned that there will be an album launch in September with Timeless Music at the Black Magenta. While it is not a personal/ solo album, the album, which is called ‘It’s about time’, will feature songs from, Stehigh, Lawva Don, BNick, and Augustus. He said that there are a total of 17 songs on the album.
