Men fined $50,000 each, licences suspended for dangerous driving

TWO drivers who were involved in a dangerous driving incident that went viral on social media have been fined $50,000 each and had their driving licences suspended for six months.
Magistrate Shivani Lalaram handed down the ruling Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The incident, which occurred on the Rupert Craig Highway, Greater Georgetown was caught on camera and showed a red Canter (#GAC 1877) and a white Hauler Truck (#GAB 849) recklessly weaving in and out of traffic, posing a significant danger to other road users.
The video quickly spread across various social media platforms, sparking public outrage and prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

The drivers, 30-year-old Jason Andres Dennis, and 33-year-old Clive Richmond were tracked down and arrested by the police on Wednesday. Upon their arrest, both men were shown the video footage and admitted to being the drivers involved in the incident.
In court, Dennis explained that he had been under immense stress at the time of the incident, having recently lost his child’s mother. Now a single parent with the responsibility of caring for his children, Dennis stated that he was frustrated because his boss insisted on giving him additional work, even though he needed to pick up his children.

The drivers swerved dangerously on a busy roadway, endangering the lives of other road users

This frustration, he claimed, led to his reckless behaviour on the road. While Richmond’s explanation was brief and less detailed, he also expressed regret for his actions.
Both men pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous driving. Magistrate Lalaram, taking into account their explanations but emphasising the severity of their actions and the potential danger posed to the public, imposed a fine of $50,000 on each driver.
Additionally, their driving licences have been suspended for six months, a move aimed at sending a strong message against reckless driving on the nation’s roads. Following the incident, the police had impounded both vehicles.

This incident highlights the growing concerns over road safety and the importance of responsible driving, especially in light of the increasing number of road accidents caused by reckless behaviour. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring that the roads remain safe for all users.
