Job creation milestone

GUYANA stands at a pivotal moment in its economic and social evolution, marked by a significant reduction in unemployment and an unprecedented engagement of its youth. Under the current administration, the nation has witnessed a dramatic turnaround in job creation, a feat that deserves both recognition and celebration.

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), recently underscored the administration’s success in reducing unemployment during his weekly press conference. Since taking office in 2020, the government has managed to create approximately 60,000 new jobs, a remarkable achievement considering the previous administration’s tenure, which was marred by substantial job losses. Dr. Jagdeo highlighted this achievement with pride, emphasising that the nation is now grappling with labour shortages—a positive problem indicating robust job growth.
The catalyst for this employment surge has been the booming oil and gas sector, which has played a central role in driving economic growth and job creation. The 2023 Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) report reinforces this, affirming the sector’s crucial role in curbing unemployment. Additionally, the government’s part-time job initiative has brought financial stability to over 15,000 Guyanese, especially in rural areas, further contributing to the decline in unemployment.
Significant investments in hinterland communities have also been instrumental. Over the past four years, approximately 6,000 jobs have been generated through initiatives like the Youth Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Programme (YEAP) and the employment of Community Service Officers (CSOs). The focus on local contractors for infrastructure projects has further bolstered employment opportunities.

This impressive job creation record surpasses the government’s 2020-2025 Manifesto promise of 50,000 new jobs, illustrating the effectiveness of its policies and its commitment to improving the livelihoods of Guyanese citizens. As the administration continues its efforts, it is anticipated that the unemployment rate will continue to fall, fostering greater economic stability and growth.
In addition to economic progress, the PPP has made notable strides in youth engagement. Dr. Jagdeo’s recent announcement that 600 young people from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) have joined the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) highlights the party’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders.

This initiative, which aims to recruit 5,000 young people into the party, reflects the PPP’s commitment to diversity and inclusive leadership. The party’s success in attracting Amerindian youths and its plans to expand this effort across all regions of Guyana signify a profound engagement with communities that have often been overlooked.

The PPP’s approach to youth recruitment and leadership development underscores its commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders. With continued focus on diversity and community engagement, the party aims to build a strong, representative leadership for the future.
Guyana’s progress in reducing unemployment and engaging its youth marks a transformative period for the nation. The combination of economic growth and strategic youth involvement promises a brighter, more inclusive future for all Guyanese.
