The will of the electorate must always be respected

Dear Editor,

I REFER to Mr. Robin Singh’s letter of 14 August. Anyone familiar with the electoral system in the Guyana Constitution and relevant legislation would know that political power comes through the ballot box.

As the French would say, “Ça va sans dire”, it goes without saying. It is for this reason that in our immediate post-independence period, persistent and credible allegations were made about rigged elections, all the way up to 1992.

It is an undisputable fact that unless the will of the electorate is respected, democracy is threatened. Equally undisputable is the fact the APNU+AFC had to be prevailed upon by the ABCE and CARICOM countries to respect the results of the 2020 elections. Otherwise, the situation could have been even more protracted.

There is no doubt that US Ambassador Lynch, and the Trump administration played a pivotal role in getting the APNU+AFC to respect the election results.

Anyone familiar with the supporting role I played during the 2020 election here, as my principals joined with local and international partners in preserving democracy and the will of the people of Guyana, would be hard pressed, in all good conscience, to question my objective and informed assessment of that electoral process and outcome.

Yours sincerely,
Neville J. Bissember
