POLICE are investigating a tragic accident that occurred at around 22:10 hrs on Friday at Zeeburg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), resulting in the death of pedestrian, 20-year-old Warren Junior Thomas.
According to preliminary reports, the accident involved motor car #PZZ 4005, owned by Sheriff Security Services, and driven by 29-year-old Okassie Rodwel Stewart at the time.
Enquiries revealed that Thomas of Area ‘G’ De Willem Public Road, WCD was lying on the southern parapet of Zeeburg Public Road when the car, traveling east along the northern drive lane, swerved over to the southern drive lane and halted in front of a Chinese supermarket.
Stewart reportedly drove over Thomas, who remained lying on the southern parapet. Stewart subsequently stopped the vehicle, exited, and engaged in conversation with a driver whose vehicle was parked in front the supermarket.
Stewart re-entered his vehicle and drove off in an eastern direction.
Thomas, critically injured in the incident, was swiftly transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital in an unconscious state. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Thomas succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at approximately 02:10 hrs on Saturday.
Upon review of CCTV footage and diligent investigative work, authorities apprehended Stewart after he returned to the scene of the accident at approximately 08:00 hrs Saturday.
Stewart is currently in custody, assisting police with their investigations.
