Preparations progressing well for PPP congress
–Dr Jagdeo says

PEOPLE’S Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has said that the preparations for the party’s congress are coming along well.

He made those remarks during a press conference at the party’s headquarters, on Thursday. The congress is set for May this year.

Dr Jagdeo said: “We have a schedule for all the things…I don’t want to give all the details because we’re going through the circular…we have the process of verifying membership to see all the requirements from the group level.

“And also, to ensure that people have met the requirements, the ten Congress and all those things that’s being done.”

The PPP General Secretary further said that this year it is supposed to be Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) turn to host congress.

“So, we will have a local committee too from Region Four outside of our Congress committee to look at logistics for the Congress. So, things are moving. Things are moving well for the congress,” Dr Jagdeo said.

The PPP had elected Dr Jagdeo, who was the then Leader of the Opposition, as the party’s General-Secretary in 2017. The incumbent Dr Jagdeo said that he is yet to decide if he will contest for re-election.

While the governing PPP is going full speed ahead with hosting its congress, the main Opposition, the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) is facing prolonged confusion, infighting, and outright drama as their congress is overdue.

Based on the established policy, the PNC/R Leader, Aubrey Norton’s stint at the helm of the party practically expired in December 2023.

Moreover, there have been reports and visible indications that fellow PNC/R members were attempting to displace Norton.

Furthermore, last year, there were clear efforts by senior members of the party to displace Leader of the Opposition, Norton.

A recording of what appeared to be a conversation among senior members of the PNC/R discussing internal matters, surfaced recently on social media.
