Sports enthusiast committed to youth development

 

FRANKLYN Bisport-Luke is a sportsman who is very active in several sporting activities and a volunteer with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Guyana, where he offers free coaching sessions for youths and children.

When called upon, he would not hesitate to visit the depressed communities across the country, where he goes into action to engage the children and youths alike in sports activities.

He has done a lot of coaching for the children and youths of Tiger Bay and other areas where the NGO network has a presence.

Bisport-Luke is an ‘on-the-go’ kind of man who is very passionate about sports. The 55-year-old is involved in powerlifting as an athlete and official (referee), boxing as a referee, bodybuilding as a Judge for the past 10 years accredited, and an official of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) as an official. He is also a CPL cricket official and coach for a gym at his place of employment, the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB), where he also trains. Bisport-Luke told the Pepperpot Magazine that he has been volunteering with several NGOs for a long time and he hosts free coaching lessons across Guyana to promote sports.

Bisport-Luke related that he is a resident of Amelia’s Ward, Linden and would make the daily commute to work. He is a Level Two Coach for weightlifting in the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Grade ‘B’ Sports Administrator, IOC, and qualified in nutrition in sports via the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Bisport-Luke added that he worked at several places, including Banks DIH, Omai Gold Mines, the Regional Democratic Council, Region 10, Guymine and his current place of employment,the DHB.

The avid sportsman stated that he is the Vice President for the NGOs Network in Guyana and President of Electra Group, an NGO within Guyana.

Bisport -Luke has participated in voluntary work as an official in the Amateur Athletics of Guyana from 2009 to present, part of the local organising committee Guyana CWC Vibes from 2007, CWC: T20 Tournament 2010 local organising committee from 2010, Carifesta- Caribbean CWC X-Tras volunteer from 2008 and RTDA- Region 10 Tourism Development Association voluntary administrative member from 2008.

Promoting the value of sports

He has actively coached many sports for the children and youths of Tiger Bay and other communities across Guyana.

Bisport-Luke related that promoting sports via his coaching is his way of giving back to society, and he sees it as a blessing to make children and youths sports-ready and realise their true potential.

The father of five and grandfather of eight told the Pepperpot Magazine that he has been involved in sports for more than 30 years, because he grew up with a passion for it.

He had his eyes set on becoming all he could be and he worked towards achieving it and it was possible through hard work, discipline and dedication.

“From secondary school in Linden, it was imbedded in me and I guess it’s because of who I am. I have the ability. I also took part in numerous sports disciplines such as volleyball, football, and dominoes. I also work for the CPL, the ICC Worl Cup and numerous other events and projects when called upon, either by my workplace or any other NGOs,” he said.

Bisport-Luke explained that he loves sports and, when called upon, would not hesitate to assist via his teaching skills and knowledge, and he feels that it is his talent to impart to others to bring out the best.

He revealed that as a sports enthusiast, discipline should be a part of your lifestyle, and to get the best, you need to train and have a good diet to remain focused.

When Bisport-Luke is not in the limelight in sports, he is behind the scenes doing the most to promote sports and engage children and youths to maximise their potential in sporting activities as a hobby and also a career.
