– Suddie Hospital celebrates unprecedented success in neonatal care
IN a remarkable tale of triumph against the odds, the medical team at Suddie Public Hospital in Region Two has achieved a milestone in neonatal care, transforming the life of an infant born weighing merely 1.1kg. Born on October 31, 2023, Adelia Rodrigues entered the world with an uncertain future, but through the dedication of medical professionals, she defied expectations.
Head of the Neonatal Department and Pediatrician, Dr. Kalesh Latchminarine, recounted the challenges faced upon Adelia’s arrival. “The baby arrived at Suddie receiving PPV via an ambu bag (a bag valve mask),” he explained, highlighting the urgency and critical condition upon admission.
A collaborative effort ensued, with a team led by Neonatologist Dr. Yelina Acosta, Dr. Francisco Pino, and Dr. Azalia Luke, alongside dedicated nurses. Dr. Latchminarine described Adelia as a “miracle” and praised her fighting spirit despite her fragile state.

“Adelia’s Challenges: A Journey of Resilience”
Prematurity presented a myriad of complications for Adelia during her stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Despite facing ELBW (Extremely Low Birth Weight), presumed sepsis, temperature instability, and other medical hurdles, Adelia’s unwavering spirit shone through.
Dr. Latchminarine emphasised the crucial role played by Adelia’s mother, Zenella Rodrigues, whose steadfast presence and care buoyed her daughter’s progress.
As the first viable neonate with such a small gestational age admitted to the NICU, Adelia’s journey was unprecedented. She spent 73 days in the NICU, where she received round-the-clock care and support. Remarkably, she was discharged on the same day the new NICU was commissioned, a testament to the hospital’s commitment to cutting-edge care.
“Homecoming and Gratitude”
Adelia’s transition from the NICU to her home marked a significant milestone, symbolising her remarkable progress. With the continuous support of doctors and nurses, Adelia thrived, gaining weight and strength with each passing day. Her parents expressed profound gratitude to the management and staff of Suddie Public Hospital for their unwavering dedication and care.
As Adelia continues her journey, she serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, inspiring all who witness her remarkable tale of survival. In the face of adversity, she has taught the power of perseverance and the boundless possibilities of medical science and human compassion.
