EFFORTS are currently being made to trace the mother of a newborn baby boy who was found in a gift bag with the afterbirth still attached, near the seaside at Mahaicony on Monday.
Police said in a press release that around 14:45 hours, an anonymous call was made to the Mahaicony Police Station.
Acting on the information received, Sergeant Williams and a party of police ranks went to Recess, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
“On arrival, a group of persons were seen gathered at an area by the seaside. Sergeant Williams went [into] the bush and picked up a newborn baby boy with the ‘after-birth’ still attached. The baby was in a multi- coloured gift bag,” police said.
The baby was then wrapped in a towel and escorted to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where he was examined by the doctor on duty, who stated that he was in good health.
Police said that the baby was admitted in the hospital’s Maternity Ward under observation.
Contact was also made with the Child Care and Protection Agency.
