CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT), Damian Blackburn, has issued a call to the banking sector to work with the company to bring added features to its Mobile Money Guyana (MMG) platform.

These features, Blackburn said, would help the company offer more electronic services and resultantly, reduce the need for paper-based procedures.

Blackburn issued the call during a recent stakeholder engagement which was hosted by President, Dr Irfaan Ali last week. The engagement focused on moving Guyana ahead and building a resilient economy for 2030 and beyond.

As discussions were in progress, one attendee spoke of the benefits of moving the country into a paperless system which will involve the use of technology and expansion of the e-commerce market in the country.

That attendee gave the example of the international platform PayPal, which supports online payments, online money transfers and e-commerce. As such, he asked the gathering what can be done to move the country forward in that regard soon.

In response to this, Blackburn stated that most of what the attendee described can be done through GTT’s MMG platform if more persons want to partner with the platform.

The CEO said that MMG has partnered extensively with the government through the Finance Ministry and other projects, which allows users to make payments for a number of things through MMG.

However, he added that there is one feature that the company is working hard to fix as he mentioned that MMG wallets cannot be topped up using credit or debit cards as other international platforms.

It was then that he issued the open invitation to members of the banking community to work along with the company to see that feature become a reality.

He said, “The day I fix that, MMG can do everything PayPal can. I issue an open invitation to all six banks in this room… tell me how we can get credit cards, Visa or Mastercard… working so you can top up your MMG and then we have a national system that will work to do exactly what you described.”

Blackburn added that the company is happy to talk to any business about that as he indicated that GTT has invested millions of dollars into the MMG system and is ready to continue moving forward in that regard.
